This festival’s origins date back to the San Lázaro district’s proud construction of an alabaster crucifix in the 17th century. Singing and dancing around this cross was part of the festivities back then, and neighboring areas like Albaicín and Realejo soon adopted the happy custom. Nowadays, the entire city celebrates it annually as a beloved occasion.

During the Day of the Cross, one delightful practice is to place a golden apple on altars with a pair of scissors stuck into it. It’s a brilliant method to avoid criticism about how the cross is decorated, and it adds a touch of originality to the festivities.
