Norway-Bergen

I can’t tell you how long I’ve wanted to travel to this amazing nation. The Norway in a Nutshell tour allowed me to see the finest of Norway in one day as I began my two-week adventure through Scandinavia in Bergen.

The Norway in a Nutshell day trip is an entirely personalized journey that takes you on the Bergen Railway, via UNESCO-designated fjords, and to the charming village of Flam by a breathtaking train ride through the famed Flam Railway.

It can be finished in its entirety by a solo traveler in a single day, departing roundtrip from Oslo, Bergen, Voss, or Flam. Spending one evening in any of these locations and adding extra activities to make a 2-3 day event is an additional variation. If you want to be more daring, consider leaving from one place and coming from another.

The Norway in a Nutshell Day Trip definitely lived up to its reputation, giving visitors a peek at the breathtaking glamour of the nation in just one unforgettable day.

Here are some of the highlights of my personal Norway in a Nutshell day trip.

Bergen to Voss

I get up early and make my way to the Bergen Rail station to catch the train to Voss. I settled in for an hour-long ride on the Bergen Railway, which is regarded as one of the best train experiences in all of Europe. The settlements located along the river sparkle with vibrant red homes as they transport you through the lovely Norwegian countryside.

When I first get to Voss, I can already feel the icy, mountainous atmosphere. I take a walk from the train to the bus stop, where I board the bus that will take me to Gudvangen.

Voss to Gudvangen

The bus ride takes us parallel to the immaculate Lønavatnet Lake as it curves past snow-covered mountains and down frozen creeks. Before I can blink, the bus is letting us off at Gudvangen’s ferry terminal, the gateway to the fjords.

I spend some time exploring the little area since I have some time to kill before getting on the ship. I warm up with a cup of coffee in the cafe inside as I take in the stunning views and the icy surroundings. It’s time to take the ferry to Flam after roughly an hour of meandering about Gudvangen.

I moved to the back of the ferry in order to get a front-row seat for the finest views, while every other passenger made a beeline for the front. I purchase a coffee from the snack station before we go, then take a seat. As the ferry departs the harbor, I can’t stop awestruck at these magnificent images of Norway.

I immediately understand why Norway’s fjords are UNESCO World Heritage Sites after a 2-hour trip on the breathtaking Aurlandsfjord and Naerøyfjord. As we sail by tiny communities perched in front of enormous mountains, the weather is nice enough to stand out on the deck with the sun shining.

In less than two hours, the ferry will have arrived at the sleepy village of Flam. With roughly an hour to kill before the Flamsbana leaves, we stroll through the hamlet taking pictures and stopping in and out of shops. Sitting outside the Flam bakery and taking in those breathtaking surroundings was the best part of my little stay.

Flam to Myrdal

If you aren’t familiar with the Flam Railway, it is thought to be one of the most breathtaking train journeys in the world. Within 45 minutes, the ride lifts you up nearly 2900 feet. The entire area was covered in snow when I went in March, creating the most enchanted winter wonderland. The Flam Train was spectacular in all weather, including rain, snow, sleet, and sunshine.

On the drive back to Bergen from Norway in a Nutshell Day Trip; the country’s beauty is just as stunning as it was when we first visited.
